City Background and History

Rio Rancho is the third largest city in New Mexico, with a population of 87,000 people. Originally part of the Alameda Grant that the Spanish gave in 1710, the area lay completely empty for the next 250 years. The land was sold to investment companies, who did nothing with it for half a century, until Amrep Corporation began buildings on the land in 1961. Originally the unincorporated Rio Rancho Estates when the first families moved in during the 1960s, the city’s population grew a thousand percent in the 1970s, leading to the city of Rio Rancho being incorporated in 1981. Intel opened a plant there that same year, which helped to fuel the city’s growth even further. Seeking independence from neighboring Albuquerque, the city today is encouraging local business growth, establishing a downtown city center, as well as arenas, a new city hall, and college campuses.

The area has an eclectic mix of business and commercial development. The aforementioned Intel Plant is, by far, the largest employer in Rio Rancho, with nearly 7,000 employees. It is also the largest, and most advanced, semiconductor plant in the world. The chip production has been completely automated, though thousands of employees can be found everywhere throughout the two billion dollar facility. This innovation meant that Rio Rancho was actually the first city to offer city-wide voice-over-WiFi, doing so way back in 2005. More recently, numerous call centers have come to the area, driving down unemployment in the city to pre-2008 lows. Numerous new facilities are opening all the time, whether its UNM West Campus, a Hewlett Packard facility, or the City Centre development.

The area also has access to many natural and manmade attractions. Take a leisurely jog or bike ride through the citywide path system that connects the outlying rings of the city to the center downtown region, or simply camp out on one of the many parks that dot the city and waste away an afternoon. A quick car ride can take you to such exciting attractions as the Albuquerque Biological Park, Zoo, and Aquarium, where you can see animals on land, in the air, or in the large aquatic facilities from all over the globe. The center also features interactive exhibits and educational presentations and programs.

Rio Rancho is one of the fastest growing cities in New Mexico, and it’s not hard to see why. With a strong, educated workforce, good jobs, cheap housing, and a concerted effort by the city to build a vibrant city center and parks system, there’s no reason not to move here.
