City Background and History

Charleston is the largest city and capital of the state of West Virginia, with a population of a little over 50,000. Charleston traces its history to 1788, when Fort Lee was constructed in the area. The official establishment of the town by the Virginia General Assembly was in 1794, with a population of 35. Charleston saw early success as a salt mining town, with the area being the largest salt producer in the world in the early 19th century. Charleston would become a central part of the Civil War, when both Union and Confederate forces attempted to control the city, which was still part of the now-seceded Virginia. The state of West Virginia was formed on June 20th, 1863, and the issue of the state capitol needed to be settled. After some hemming and hawing, and an eventual vote by West Virginia citizens, Charleston was decided as the capitol. Today, Charleston is not only the home of the state capitol, but it is also the center of West Virginia’s cultural life.

Charleston is a city that both knows where it came from and where it’s going. The entire neighborhood of Virginia and Quarrier Streets is considered a historical neighborhood, encompassing over a square mile. Many of the buildings in the area date to the mid-19th century, though a few prominent art deco apartments stick out as impressive examples of the form. The state capitol, rebuilt a few times after fire, now dates to 1932, and is modeled after the US capitol, including a dome clad in 24 carat gold that is actually slightly larger than the US capitol’s. Tours are available five days a week, and the grounds are always open for visitors to stroll and picnic in.

Charleston is also home to numerous festivals that take part throughout the the year, with more than enough events for people of any tastes. Classical music buffs will enjoy Symphony Sunday, held each June, which is full of fun, dancing, music, a performance by the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, and a large fireworks display. Film buffs will appreciate the West Virginia International Film Festival, which happens twice each year and is the official festival of the state of Virginia. The FestivALL gives local artists and musicians a chance to showcase their works each Labor Day weekend. Coinciding with this is a wine and jazz festival at the University of Charleston, which lets you appreciate some of the finer things in life.
