City Background and History

Wheeling is the fifth largest city in the state of West Virginia, with a population of nearly 30,000. The city’s origins began in 1769, when Ebenezer Zane claimed the area via ‘tomahawk rights’ by cutting down a few trees at a spring and cutting his initials into one of them. He subsequently named the location Zanesburg, though he later divided the land into segments, and soon thereafter the Virginia legislature named the town Wheeling and chartered it in 1795. The name Wheeling is a matter of some dispute, with it perhaps referring, unscrupulously, to scalping by Native Americans in the area. The city was bolstered by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad coming to Wheeling in 1853. The area became a hotbed of abolitionist activism in what was then Virginia, as there were very few people in the city who relied on slavery for their business enterprises. The city became the first capital of West Virginia when it was created in 1863, and though Charleston would become the capital soon thereafter, it was one of the industrial centers of the state for many years.

Wheeling is a city that takes its enjoyment seriously. Oglebay Park and Resort Complex is the only self-supporting public park in the country, and lies on over 1,650 acres of beautiful grounds. Several historical buildings, including the Mansion Museum, display a wide plethora of Wheeling’s unique history in the state, as well as a hefty Civil War collection. The area also includes two golf courses, including one designed by Arnold Palmer. If golf isn’t your thing, hit some laps in the Olympic-sized pool, or maybe play some tennis on one of the park’s many courts. There is also a lodge, nearly 50 cottages, greenhouses, and expansive gardens. If you think that’s a lot, just wait until you head to the Schrader Nature Center, and the Good Zoo, which even includes a planetarium inside of it. Top it all off with the beautiful Schenk Lake, and it’s not hard to see why Oglebay Park is the crown jewel of Wheeling and the envy, and model, for much of the rest of the nation.

Intown, you can get a little adult excitement at the Wheeling Island Hotel Casino and Racetrack, which includes the #1 Greyhound track in the country. There are also table games, slots, luxurious restaurants and world-class hotels to enjoy. Numerous live performances dot the city year-round, from the Stifel Fine Arts Center, which showcases local artists’ works throughout the year, or the Carriage House Museum, offering beautiful glass blowing techniques, classes, and exhibits.

If you are interested in spending your days in one of the best parks in the country, working in the city or nearby Ohio or Pennsylvania, or just want a great city to settle down in, Wheeling is the place for you.
