City Background and History

Cheyenne is the capital and most populous city in Wyoming, with a population of 60,000. Cheyenne was first laid out in 1867, by Grenville M. Dodge, and was chosen to be the point which the Union Pacific Railroad crossed the Crow Creek. The city was named by his friends, in honor of the Cheyenne Native American nation. The city exploded in both population and hope because of the railroad, and quickly reached a population of over 4,000. Growth was so voracious that the residents couldn’t build houses and facilities fast enough to accommodate all the new growth, so many residents temporarily stayed in tents. The nearby Fort D.A. Russell, now named F.E. Warren Air Force Base, was founded concurrently with Cheyenne, and the two entities have long since relied on each other to grow and prosper.

Modern Cheyenne may be best known to most of the rest of the world for being host to Cheyenne Frontier Days, which is an annual rodeo and western celebration held in the city since 1897. Spreading out over 10 days, it is the largest such event in the world, and the population of Cheyenne usually quintuples on any given day during the celebration. A State Fair on steroids, ‘The Daddy of ‘em All” features carnival rides, games, a midway, more food choices than any one person could eat, wild west showings, Indian villages, a huge outdoor rodeo, historical reenactments, and gun demonstrations. The US Air Force Thunderbirds even make an appearance at the air show here every year.

Much more than just this annual extravaganza though, Cheyenne is serious about making sure its residents have ample time to enjoy their life in the city, no matter the season. The Greater Cheyenne Greenway is a huge network of parks and trails that connect nearly every corner of Cheyenne, and is so expansive that the city was named Trail Town USA by the National Park Service and the American Hiking Society. The city, as the capital, also boasts a large amount of history of Wyoming, and the area around it. Of special note are the locomotive and railroad museums in the area, with engines like the Big Boy Steam Engine, the largest steam locomotive in the world, and the Cheyenne Depot Museum, which is a railroad fan’s heaven on earth.

With a strong economy, great recreation, and the small-town charm of this mid-sized city, there’s no reason not to move to Cheyenne. Contact Cheyenne auto shipping companies today for their expert assistance in relocating to the Magical City on the Plains.
