City Background and History

Parkersburg is the third largest city in the state of West Virginia, with a population of a little over 32,000. Planned during the American Revolutionary War, the area was originally named Newport, and given to Alexander Parker for his service in said war. After some squabbling between the city planners and Parker, the city was named Parkersburg in 1810, and chartered ten years later by the Virginia General Assembly. The city grew thanks to the Baltimore and Ohio River coming near the town, which started a long history of the city prospering from the abundant natural resources that were present in the area, and the manufacturing that accompanied the primary resources nearby.

As a city that has never forgotten where it came from, Parkersburg is home to a large amount of history that you can experience every day. The Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History is the center for all things Parkersburg, and is conveniently located right in the downtown of the city. With three floors full of artifacts and exhibits from all aspects of the city’s past and present, there is no better place to get a handle on the area’s rich culture than at the museum. The nearby Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park is the site of the Aaron Burr’s plan to establish an empire in the American southwest. Though his plan failed, the park features the impressive Blennerhassett Mansion, which is complete with tours, narrated wagon rides, and hiking trails and park spaces that wind throughout the island. For a look at the region’s history as a producer of the fuel that has driven the nation for the past 150 years, check out the Oil and Gas Museum, which doubles as a Civil War Musuem of the area, coinciding with the founding of this resource as a viable alternative to coal and wood.

For a little high culture, check out the Fenton Art Glass Museum, which, in addition to being home of the largest handmade colored glass manufacturer in the United States, is a great place to check out some of the great innovations that the family business has created over the years, like floral decorations and gold accents. Afterwards, take in a show at the Smoot Theatre, a vaudeville era theatre, that was saved just days before it was to be demolished. Today, the theatre is home to everything from one man shows, seminars, and comedy and dance routines. No matter your taste, there is something at the Smoot Theatre for you.

Whether its the small-town charm, or just a great place to relocate the family, you’ll want to contact the Parkersburg auto shipping companies to help you make the move to this great city. Their expert help will make the transition a piece of cake, and you’ll be enjoying Parkersburg in no time!
