City Background and History

Nashua is the second largest city in New Hampshire, with a population of just over 85,000. The city was founded in 1746 when New Hampshire separated from Massachusetts, and the area was incorporated as the town of Dunstable. Settled as far back as 1655, the area had a geographical advantage that made it the center of the fur trade: it was located at the confluence of the Nashua and Merrimack Rivers. This made the area a prime place for large mills, and the area became one of the largest finished cotton producers in the world during the 19th century. Though the area briefly split in two in a civil war of sorts in the 1850s, Nashua rejoined, and prospered handsomely until the end of WWI. The area suffered a slow decline from there, though the arrival of what is now BAE Systems in one of the old mills started the city’s rebirth. Today, Nashua is considered one of the best small cities in the country, and routinely places at the top of many best places to live lists.

With Boston only 45 minutes away, Nashua’s economy is one of its largest strengths. The area is a safe, prosperous small city that still offers a commutable distance to Boston, making it a boon for urban professionals. These same professionals normally have high-paying jobs, driving Nashua’s high median income, one of the top in New Hampshire’s high average. For those not wanting to make the trek to Boston every day, Nashua is home to companies such as Oracle, and numerous high-tech firms in fields such as biotechnology make it an attractive city for any business professional. The area also has a very strong services sector, thanks to being on the border to Massachusetts. New Hampshire has no sales tax, and this leads to people crossing the state line in droves to shop at the conveniently placed malls and shops.

Nashua has been named the ‘Best City to Live In’ by Money magazine, being so named in both 1987 and 1997. The city is a perennial maker of the list, and is featured in other publications for such superlatives as ‘safest city.’ It’s not hard to see why: Nashua is close to the seacoast as well as the White Mountains. Nashua boasts a large park system, and has numerous entertainment venues, such as the local symphony and ballet.
