City Background and History

Montpelier is the fifth largest city in Vermont, and, also, its capital. With a population of just 8,000, Montpelier is the smallest city that serves as a state capital in the nation. The city was founded in 1787, and, shortly thereafter, the city was named in honor the the French city of Montpellier. Though the Colonel who named the city had no formal association with France, the city was named in honor of the French who had helped the fledgling country during the American Revolutionary War. The city became a shipping and cultural center of Vermont thanks to the Vermont Central Railroad and the powerful Winooski River Falls, on which the city was founded. The city has changed little in the past 100 years, with many turn of the century buildings still operating with new tenants. Indeed, the population of Montpelier has remained more or less stable for over 110 years, with the census population actually being one person large in 1910 than in 2010. This has made Montpelier a great place to see a historic New England community in action.

As the capital of Vermont, the city is home to many of the state’s official versions of things, from buildings like the state house, to places like the Vermont Historical Society Museum. The Vermont State House is worth a visit alone, where you can get a free tour through the 1859 building that features informative guides and even a chance to sit at legislator’s desks and pretend to be a member of the most liberal government in the nation. At the historical society, you can learn about how Vermont was the first territory in America to outlaw slavery back in 1777, before it was even a state, and enjoy such activities as walking through an Abenaki wigwam.

After enjoying some history, why not head out for some serious outdoor fun. Nestled in the Green Mountains, Montpelier has a lot to offer people of any persuasion when it comes to recreational opportunities. The Wrightsville Beach Recreation Area on the Winooski River has a beach, boat launch, and open fields for picnics or tossing a football around. For something a little more wild, there are rapid and raging waters all across the region to raft, canoe, and kayak. Check out the North Branch Nature Center, which is nestled in 28 acres of undisturbed wilderness and features some of the best bird watching anywhere. Finish up the day at any of Montpelier’s local restaurants. There’s a good chance that the food you are eating has come from a farm nearby, as the Food-to-Table movement is alive and well in the city.

Whether looking to attend the Vermont College of Fine Arts, become a state senator, or just enjoying a close-knit community in northern New England, Montpelier is just the place for you. Contact Montpelier auto shipping companies today for their expert assistance in moving you to this great city.
