City Background and History

Las Cruces, Spanish for “the crosses,’ is the second largest city in New Mexico, with a population of just under 100,000. The city, located close to the Mexican border, is in the Mesilla Valley, making it part of the Rio Grande floodplain, and a fertile agricultural region. The area, though uninhabited, swapped hands a few times in the centuries that followed the initial Spanish Claim. The United States gained control of the region in 1848, and the US Army laid out plans for the city the following year. The city remained little more than a small train depot town until the arrival of New Mexico State University in 1888. This brought a sudden wealth of knowledge and skill to the area, and the city began to thrive. The addition of the White Sands Missile Range in the 1940s, and the White Sands Test Facility in 1963 further spurned the area’s growth, and almost all of the highly-paid, highly-skilled workers at these facilities live, play, and shop in Las Cruces.

Modern Las Cruces lacks a central business district, which makes it odd for a city its size. That is because, in the 1960s, most of the buildings in downtown were torn down during a large urban renewal project, which replaced the business core with shops, pedestrian malls, and restaurants. The six-block area is now pedestrian only, and is a must-see for any visitor in Las Cruces. Here you can find museums, restaurants, art galleries, theatres, and cuisines from all over the planet. Main Street has also been widened, with more parking for guests and better walking access to the shops that line the street. Continuing with this theme of aggressive projects, the city recently announced it was teaming with the Army Corps of Engineers to build a 700 acre park around the Las Cruces Dam, which will be a refuge for migratory birds in the area, in addition to being a wonderful green space for residents to enjoy.

Las Cruces is home to many annual festivals. The Border Book Festival is held each April and features every reading and book-related item possible, with the goal to foster a love of reading and learning in children and adults. The Whole Enchilada Fiesta, southern New Mexico’s biggest festival, features the world’s largest enchilada, recently coming in at over 10.5 feet. Much more than just a giant dish, the festival has parades, live music, carnivals, car shows, and even athletic competitions.

Whether you want to mow down on the whole enchilada, or just want a community where citizens help each other and their city, then Las Cruces is the place for you. Contact Las Cruces auto shipping companies today for their expert help in moving you to the City of the Crosses.
