City Background and History

Grand Forks is the third largest city in North Dakota, with a population of just over 50,000. Together with its sister city to the east, the aptly named East Grand Forks in neighboring Minnesota, the two “Grand Cities” combine to form an area with a population of about 100,000. The city was founded in 1881 by a steamboat captain named Alexander Griggs at the confluence of the Red River and the Red Lake River, which form rapids that lend the city its name. The city grew quickly after the arrival of the railroad, and that growth accelerated when the site was chosen for the new University of North Dakota in the 1890s, and again after Grand Forks was chosen as the site of a new Air Force base following WWII. Today, Grand Forks is a prosperous city that, like much of North Dakota, is in the midst of an economic and cultural revival.

Much of the reason for Grand Fork’s success is on the back of its diversified economy. No single industry or sector dominates the city’s economy, leading to a mature climate that can weather downturns in any one area. The largest employer is the University of North Dakota, which helps bring an educated populace high-paying jobs. The Air Force Base does the same, providing work for both military and civilians alike. Wind turbine manufacuteres and a small plane manufacturer also call Grand Forks home, as does an Amazon.com call center, a potato processor, and the largest flour mill in the country, North Dakota Mill and Elevator. This smattering of businesses is just a small sample of the incredible diversity of Grand Forks’s economy, which helps the area have an exceedingly low unemployment rate.

There is also plenty of places to play in Grand Forks as well. Thanks to the University of North Dakota, the area features an extensive array of art venues for one to enjoy. The North Dakota Museum of Art, located at the university, often features national touring exhibits like those found at the Smithsonians, as well as local and regional galleries, including a section devoted to art by the students of the university. Grand Forks also boasts an official symphony, band, and chorale group that perform throughout the city year-round. If some green space is your thing, the Greater Grand Forks Greenway is the crown jewel of the park system here. The park that runs the length of the river has fairgrounds, ski-trails, and over 45 miles of bike paths and wildflower gardens.

Whether you are looking for new work, or just want to enjoy a great city, Grand Forks is a place to call home. Contact Grand Forks auto shipping companies today for their assistance in moving you to this city.
