City Background and History

Fargo is the largest city in North Dakota, with a population of a little over 100,000. The area was first named Centralia, but was renamed after the founder of Wells Fargo and Northern Pacific Railroad, William Fargo, after he brought the railroad to the location in the mid 19th century. After the arrival of the railroad, Fargo became known as one of the ‘Gateways of the West,’ and though lacking the flair of St. Louis or Independence, the area became a bustling transportation hub for those seeking to go west through the upper Rocky Mountains. Fargo once held the dubious distinction of being the divorce capital of the United States in the 1880s, thanks to exceedingly lenient divorce laws there compared to the rest of the country. In the 1950s, the area was struck by a violent F5 tornado, which wiped out much of downtown. Scott Fujita, the soon-to-be-creator of the Fujita Scale, used the pictures and videos of the tornado to formulate his now widespread beliefs in how tornados function, making the tornado that hit Fargo the first tornado to ever be studied scientifically and leading to the increased predictions and warning systems we have today.

Fargo has had the benefit in recent years of being named at, or near, the top of Money magazine’s most livable cities list. Among the reasons cited are Fargo’s exceedingly low unemployment rate, even in spite of the Great Recession, low crime rates, and availability of affordable housing. Fargo was also recently rated as the 7th best small city to start a business in by Forbes, likewise citing low unemployment, an educated workforce, and business-friendly tax systems and infrastructure. Though traditionally agricultural based, Fargo’s economy has become much more diversified over the past few decades, allowing it to withstand the ebbs and flows of the nation’s economy much more easily than other areas dependent on one form of employment.

The three universities located within city limits help fuel Fargo’s boisterous arts and culture scenes. A multitude of free art galleries, public performances, and concerts of all shapes and sizes can be found throughout Fargo no matter the weather. The Fargodome is home to Broadway plays, sporting events, and many conventions and craft fairs as well. The state’s largest art museum is also found in Fargo, as is the Fargo Air Museum, which has a wealth of World War II and older planes, over 90% of which are still flyable.
