City Background and History

Auburn is the fifth largest community in Maine, with a population of a little over 20,000 people. Together with its twin city Lewiston across the Androscoggin River, they make up the Lewiston-Auburn metropolitan area, which nears 100,000 people in total population. Though the area was to be settled in 1714, multiple shifts in ownership of the area between Native, British, and French forces meant that Auburn wouldn’t be formally founded until after the American Revolution. First a part of the town of Bakerstown, and later Poland, and then Minot, Auburn was finally incorporated in 1842, and named for the village from the poem “The Deserted Village” by Oliver Goldsmith. A powerhouse in the shoemaking industry in the early 20th century, Auburn would reinvent itself in the 1980s, following the same pattern as its twin across the river by bringing in local businesses, rebuilding downtown, and encouraging technological industries to relocate to the city.

Auburn’s best feature may be the festivals that happen here year-round. The Winter Festival, running for ten days from the end of January to the beginning of February, has events happening all over town, from the local ski resort Lost Valley to the local ice arena, and everywhere in between. The Recreation Department hosts pond hockey tournaments, snow rafting, snowmobile races, downhill skiing races and more for children and adults of all ages. The Dempsey Challenge, a running and cycling event founded by Patrick Dempsey, has thousands of participants and raises over a million dollars a year for cancer research each year.

The Great Falls Balloon Festival each August launches hundreds of hot air balloons through the weekend. The festival also has crafts, a carnival complete with games and rides, performances from all sorts of local acts, and a parade that caps off the festivities. The Lewiston and Auburn Film Festival shows films from national, regional, and local acts.

As is always the case in Maine, if you want outdoor recreation, the sky’s the limit. The ocean is only half an hour away, as are the White Mountains of New Hampshire and Maine. Rafting, canoeing, fishing, and boating are available on the Androscoggin River. Hunting, hiking, cycling, and swimming can be done to your heart’s content at locations around and in Auburn.

If you like the ocean, the mountains, and all four seasons – and who doesn’t – then what are you waiting for? Call Auburn auto shipping companies today to have them assist you in your relocation to this wonderful Maine community.
